Mining LP Drills® – Proven in the Harshest Conditions
The Mining LP DRILL® from Center Rock is not just another mining drill. It’s the updated version of the very same LP Drill used in the Chilean Mine Rescue, when 33 miners were trapped more than 2,000 feet underground. That moment showed the world the strength of our technology and reinforced our commitment to delivering reliable solutions for mining.
Built for Efficiency in Mining Applications
Mining operations demand tools that can perform under constant pressure. The Mining LP DRILL® was designed specifically for underground applications such as:
- Burn holes
- Utility holes
- Ventilation shafts
- Dewatering
- Rescue shafts
With diameters starting at 24″ (610 mm) and customizable for larger requirements, these drills adapt to the needs of mining projects worldwide.
Key Features and Benefits of Mining LP Drills®
Center Rock has engineered the Mining LP DRILL® with features that keep crews efficient and operations safe:
- Push or Pull Applications – Flexible setup for angled or vertical drilling.
- Free-Spinning Bits – Maintain bore accuracy and reduce wear.
- Accessible Hammers and Bits – Simplifies servicing, reducing downtime.
- Complete Service Package – Every LP comes with the necessary support tools.
- Air Requirements – 400–500 CFM per hammer; e.g., a 30″ LP uses three hammers requiring 1,200 CFM.
- Configurable Hammer Sets – Each LP is fitted with 6” hammers and 7.88” bits, with hammer count determined by bore size.
- Serviceability – Individual hammers are easily removed with an LP bolt for quick maintenance.
These features make the Mining LP DRILL® a trusted solution across diverse underground drilling projects.
Service and Support That Back the Product
Mining doesn’t pause — and neither does Center Rock. Every Mining LP DRILL® purchase is supported with:
- 24/7 customer service for troubleshooting.
- On-site startup assistance by trained technicians.
- Guidance on proper tooling techniques to maximize equipment life and performance.
A Legacy of Innovation – The Chilean Mine Rescue
The Mining LP DRILL® gained worldwide recognition in 2010 during the Chilean Mine Rescue.
On August 5, 2010, 33 miners were trapped beneath 700,000 tons of collapsed rock in the San Jose Mine. With projections estimating a rescue by Christmas, Center Rock was called in. Using our Low Profile Drill (LP) technology, adapted into what the media called “Plan B,” our team worked alongside international drilling crews to reach the miners.
- The drill broke through to the trapped miners far ahead of schedule on October 9, 2010.
- A 26″ LP DRILL created the final shaft wide enough for the Phoenix rescue capsule.
- Each hammer in the system pounded through rock with precision, while Center Rock engineers introduced innovative DTH tooling to make the operation possible.
Richard Soppe, one of Center Rock’s engineers, described the moment of breakthrough: “It was the greatest moment of my life when we knew those 33 guys were going to come out alive.”
This global event showed the world that Center Rock’s Mining LP technology is not only effective but life-saving.
